Mac PPP TCP
 
These instructions assume you know basic Macintosh operations such as opening/closing windows and selecting buttons/boxes.

ConfigPPP version is 2.5 but others should work. If you are using Open transport, you need version 1.0.8 or greater.

You must have PPP in your system folder/extensions and ConfigPPP in your system folder/control panels.

1. From the controls panel folder, open ConfigPPP.

2. In the port name window, select the port your modem is connected to (usually modem).

3. Set idle time out (minutes) to 15.

4. Set echo interval (seconds) to OFF.

5. Terminal window should be unchecked.

6. Hang up on close should be checked.

7. Quiet mode should be unchecked.

8. Click on the New. . . button and type RGV in the text.

9. Click on the OK button to close the text box.

10. PPP server should now say RGV.

11. Click on the Config . . . button to open a new dialogue box.

12. RGV should be highlighted in the PPP server name box.

13. Set port speed to 14.4 or higher.

14. Set flow control to CTS or RTS.

15. Click the dial tone button unless your phone line is on a pulse dial system/

16. In the phone number box enter 463-1118 (Lexington).

17. Leave the modem init box blank unless you know that your modem requires specific set of init characters.

18. Set modem connect time out to 90 seconds.

19. Click on the authentication button to open a new dialog window.

20. Enter your user name in the first box.

21. Enter your password I the second box.

22. Change wait time out to 10 seconds.

23. Click on the ok button to close the dialog window.

24. Click on the done button to close the Config . . . dialog window.

25. Close ConfigPPP.

Configuring Your Mac

Macintosh/Apple Settings

This section describes settings for some different Macintosh operating systems.

NOTE: RGV does NOT support Mac operating systems lower than OS9.  Our helpdesk can provide assistance for OS9 and above, however for support on other OS, you will need to contact Macintosh/Apple.


Mac OS7.6 - 8.1 with Open Transport:

1. Open the PPP Control Panel by going to the Apple Menu at the upper left corner of the screen, dragging down to Control Panels, and over to PPP.

2. Click on the circle beside Registered User. Type your log-in name in the Name field. Type your password in the Password field. Check Save Password if you do not want to type in your password each time you log on. Type RGV’s phone number, 463-1118, in the Number field.

3. Click on the menu PPP at the top of the screen. Drag down and select the first choice, Modem. This will open the Modem Control Panel.

4. Put your mouse on the pop-up menu beside the words Connect via. Hold down the button and select the port, modem or printer, to which your modem is connected.

5. Next, put your mouse on the pop-up menu beside the word, Modem. Click on the menu and select the type of modem you have. You may have different choices than the ones you see here. If you do not know what type of modem you have, refer to your Macintosh user’s manual, or select “generic modem” type.

6. If you want to hear your modem dial and answer, select on beside the word, Sound. Select Tone beside Dialing if you have touch tone service. Do not put a check in the Ignore Dial Tone box. Click the close box at the upper left corner of the window. Click Save at the prompt. This will take you back to the PPP Control Panel.

7. Under the menu PPP, select TCP/IP.

8. Using the pop-up menu beside Connect Via, select PPP.

9. Go to the pop-up menu beside the word Configure. Select Using PPP Server.

10. Click the close box at the upper left-hand corner. Select Save at the prompt. This will take you back to the PPP Control Panel. In the PPP control panel, click the close box at the upper left-hand corner. Select Save at the prompt.

To access the Internet, launch your Internet browser. The computer will automatically dial the access number.

To disconnect from the Internet, open the PPP Control Panel by going to the Apple Menu at the upper left corner of the screen, dragging down to Control Panels, and over to PPP. Click the Disconnect button.  


Mac OS 8.5 - 9.4 with Open Transport:

1. From Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and select Remote Access:

2. In Name enter your RGV user Id (your email address without "@rockbridge.net")

3. In Password enter your password (case sensitive, you will only see bullets)

4. Check the Save Password box to avoid re-entering your password each time you log in.

5. Leave the Use Dial Assist box unchecked.

6. In Number enter 463-1118.

7. Click on Options.

8. From the redial tab, select Dial Main Number Only, enter 10 for number of times and 5 second intervals between redials.

9. From the Connection tab, make sure that ALL boxes are unchecked.

10. Select PPP protocol, and check the second and third boxes from the top down, make sure that the bottom (4th) check box is unchecked. You may check or leave unchecked the top box at your discretion.

11. Click OK, close the Remote Access window; when prompted to save changes, do so.

12. From Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and select Modem.

13. Make sure that your modem is selected in the pop-up menu. Make sure that Ignore Dial Tone is not checked, the other check boxes depend on whether you have tone or pulse dial tone, and on whether you want to listen to the modem while dialing and/or connecting.

14. Close the Modem window; when prompted to save changes, do so.

15. From Apple Menu, go to Control Panels and select TCP/IP.

16. Select PPP in the Connect Via pop-up menu, and PPP server.

17. In search domains, enter rockbridge.net.


Mac OS10:

1. Click Applications.

2. Click System Preferences.

3. Click Network.

4. On the PPP tab, enter RGV as the service provider.

5. Enter the phone number: 463-1118 (Lexington).

6. Enter the account name.

7. Enter the password.

8. On the TCP/IP tab, select Using PPP in the Configure box.

9. In Search Domain box, type rockbridge.net.

10. On the Modem tab, make sure that the Wait for Dial Tone option is checked.

11. Exit out of Network and save the settings if you are prompted.

12. While still in the System Preferences window, push and hold down the Option key on your keyboard.

13. Click on the icon for Internet Connection, but do not release the mouse button.

14. Now, holding both Option button down and the mouse button down, drag the icon out onto the desktop.

15. When the icon is on the desktop, you may release the mouse and the Option key. 

16. You now have an alias for your Internet Connection on your desktop.

17. You may now exit out of the System Preferences window.

18. Connect through the Internet Connection on your desktop.
